Lillian Gish & Greta Garbo ~ Class Acts!

Lillian Gish & Greta Garbo on the MGM set of Miss Gish film "The Wind" (1927).

Two of the greatest film stars in American history were under contract at MGM at the same time. Not friends, rivals! They would visit each other on the sets of the films they were starring in. Sometimes without ever speaking, they would watch and walk away. Their respect was mutual.

"We knew each other. We talked. We passed each other going to the set of our own films. We were doing our jobs. We had great mutual respect." Lillian Gish

The "Divine" Garbo would stay at MGM for the entirety of her film career. By choice, her choice - she would leave MGM. She would walk away.

By mutual agreement, Miss Gish would end her own contract.

"I had full control of my pictures at first. I was able to choose the story, my fellow actors, the Director. And the pictures did very well. They were considered 'prestige' pictures. But [Irving] Thalberg wanted commercial hits. I wanted art." Lillian Gish
