Frank Capra’s The Miracle Woman (1931) Barbara Stanwyck

Frank Capra’s The Miracle Woman (1931) Barbara Stanwyck

The Miracle Woman is a 1931 American drama film directed by Frank Capra and starring Barbara Stanwyck, David Manners, and Sam Hardy.

Based on the play Bless You Sister by John Meehan and Robert Riskin, the film is about a preacher's daughter who becomes disillusioned by the mistreatment of her dying father by his church. Having grown cynical about religion, she teams up with a con man and performs fake miracles for profit. The love and trust of a blind man, however, restores her faith in God and her fellow man.

The Miracle Woman was the second of five film collaborations between Capra with Stanwyck. Produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures, the film was inspired by the life of Aimee Semple McPherson.

El Vampiro (1957) The Vampire - Spanish (English sub-titles)

El vampiro (English: The Vampire) is a 1957 Mexican horror film, directed by Fernando Méndez. The film is about Marta, a young woman, who travels to her childhood village, only to find that one of her aunts is dead and another is under the influence of Mr. Duval, who later turns out to be a vampire whose name is the Count Karol de Lavud. It is possibly the first movie to actually show a vampire with elongated canines. F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (Max Schrek) had elongated incisors; Tod Browning's Dracula (Bela Lugosi) did not show his teeth at all.

This film can therefore be seen as a link between the Universal and the Hammer presentations of vampires.

Show Boat (1936) Irene Dunne, Helen Morgan, Allan Jones, Hattie McDaniel, Paul Robeson

Show Boat is a 1936 film. Directed by James Whale, it is based on the musical play by Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (script and lyrics), which the team adapted from the novel by Edna Ferber.

This film version of the famed stage classic from Universal Pictures, which in 1929 had filmed a part-talkie version of Ferber's original novel, is, unlike most film versions of stage musicals at the time, for the most part an extremely faithful adaptation, and retains the interracial subplot so important to both the novel and the show.

Carl Laemmle, head of Universal, had been deeply dissatisfied with the 1929 film, and had long wanted to make an all-sound version of the hit musical. It was originally scheduled to be made in 1934, but plans to make this version with Russ Columbo as the gambler Gaylord Ravenal fell through when Columbo was killed that year in a shotgun accident, and shooting of the film was rescheduled. The film, with several members of the original Broadway cast, was begun in late 1935 and released in 1936.

In addition to the songs retained from the stage production, Kern and Hammerstein wrote three additional songs for the film. Two of them were performed in spots previously reserved for songs from the stage production.

Starring Irene Dunne, Allan Jones, Charles Winninger, Paul Robeson, Helen Morgan
Helen Westley, Hattie McDaniel, Queenie Smith, Sammy White
Directed by James Whale
Produced by Carl Laemmle, Jr.

Song of the South (1946)

Song of the South is a 1946 feature film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures. The film is based on the Uncle Remus cycle of stories by Joel Chandler Harris. The live actors provide a sentimental frame story, in which Uncle Remus relates the folk tales of the adventures of Brer Rabbit and his friends. These anthropomorphic animal characters appear in animation. The hit song from the film was "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", which won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song and is frequently used as part of Disney's montage themes, and which has become widely-used in popular culture. The film inspired the Disney theme park attraction Splash Mountain.

The film has never been released in its entirety on home video in the USA, because of content which Disney executives believe would be construed by some as racist toward black people, and is thus subject to much rumor. Some portions of this film have been issued on VHS and DVD as part of either compilations or special editions of Disney films.

This is a U.K. release, complete and un-cut.

Starring Ruth Warrick, Bobby Driscoll, James Baskett (Special Academy Award for this role), Luana Patten, Lucile Watson, Hattie McDaniel, Glenn Leedy, Johnny Lee, Nick Stewart
Directed by Harve Foster (live action)
Wilfred Jackson (animation)
Produced by Walt Disney
Written by Dalton S. Reymond, Morton Grant, Maurice Rapf, Bill Peet, Ralph Wrigh, George Stallings
Joel Chandler Harris (original stories)
Music by Daniele Amfitheatrof, Paul J. Smith (score), Edward Plumb (orchestration)
Cinematography Gregg Toland
Editing by William M. Morgan
Studio Walt Disney Productions
Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures
Release date: November 12, 1946
Running time 94 minutes

Academy Award recognition
The score was nominated in the "Scoring of a Musical Picture" category, and "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", written by Allie Wrubel and Ray Gilbert won the award for Best Song at the 20th Academy Awards on March 20, 1948.

A special Academy Award was given "To James Baskett for his able and heart-warming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and story teller to the children of the world in Walt Disney's 'Song of the South.'" Bobby Driscoll and Luana Patten in their portrayals of the children characters Johnny and Ginny were also discussed for Special Juvenile Awards, but in 1947 it was decided not to present such awards at all.

Academy Award 1948 Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah & A special Academy Award was given "To James Baskett for his able and heart-warming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and story teller to the children of the world in Walt Disney's "Song of the South."

This Klondike epic from Frank Lloyd came out just a few months after Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925) and tells almost the same story, except with less comedy and A LOT more action and female entanglements! So if you need a alternative to Chaplin's version, or hungry for more gold rush films, then this one is for you!

Ben Lyon stars as the naive one, getting continually screwed over by people he meet. The only real friend he finds is Victor McLaglen, as a jolly French Canadian, which was a bit weird. But he's the life and counter personality to all the greedy people that climb the hills and sail the rough water for wealth. And there are 3 ladies mixed in to make it extra complicated, along with several sub-plots/persons to fill the 2 hours of adventure.

Lady Death (2004)

Lady Death: The Movie is a 2004 North American animated film based on the comic book character Lady Death. This film was the first animation project produced by now-defunct anime distributor A.D. Vision. It had premiered at the 2004 Comic-Con convention.

Directed by Andy Orjuela
Produced by Andy Orjuela
Screenplay by Brian Pulido
Story by Carl Macek
Starring Christine M. Auten
Music by Bill Brown
Studio A.D. Vision
Release date: July 24, 2004
Running time: 80 minutes
Country: United States
Language: English

Brian Pulido's cadaverous comic book heroine springs to animated life in the full-length, made-for-video anime film LADY DEATH. In 15th-century Sweden, an innocent young maiden named Hope discovers that her beloved father is, in fact, the Devil in disguise.

Condemned to be burned at the stake by the local townsfolk, Hope strikes a deal with Lucifer to spend eternity in Hell in exchange for escape from her igneous death. But once in the fiery depths, Hope breaks the pact and transforms herself into the voluptuous, white-haired warrior Lady Death, battling to wrest control of Hell away from her demonic father in a last-ditch effort at salvation.

Director Andrew Orjuela, screenwriter Carl Macek (ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE), and composer Bill Brown (ANY GIVEN SUNDAY) imbue Pulido's epic tale with a Neil Gaiman-meets-Bruegel style of animation perfectly suited to its gothic subject matter.

Christmas Eve (1986) Loretta Young
with Arthur Hill, Ron Leibman, Trevor Howard, Patrick Cassidy, Season Hubley, Kate Reid

Golden Globe - Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV (1987) - Loretta Young

NBC TV network, Original airing Dec. 22nd, 1986 - Story of a well-to-do elderly woman, who befriends the homeless and volunteers her time with children, who learns she has an incurable illness and wants desperately to reunite her three grown grand children (who are scattered across the U.S. living their own lives), with their estranged father, her son. She hires a private detective to search for them so as to try to get everyone together on Christmas Eve for one last reunion. DVD exactly as see on TV.

A heart warming story line that most can relate to. "Loretta Young brings her strength, intelligence and charm to this role. Welcome Back!"

Although scripts were still occasionally coming in, Loretta now considered herself permanently retired. That is, until 1986, when she was offered the perfect script, the lead in an NBC made-for-TV movie titled "Christmas Eve."

Filming was on location in Toronto, and twelve hour days were the norm, the director and crew allowed her to sleep a little later than everyone else in the mornings. Other than that, at 74, she kept up with the pace.

And she had lost none of her perfectionist tendencies: every night she looked at her dailies to see if her character was developing on-screen the way she should. "Unless you do," she told the director, "you don't know if the character is alive, dead, or too one-dimensional."

Four months later with Ronald Reagan - Loretta attended the Golden Globe awards. As the "Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Movie" category was announced, the winner was . . . Loretta Young! She received a standing ovation as she went onstage to collect her prize. "Miracles do happen," she said to the packed hall. "God in His mysterious way gave me 23 years to prepare for this role. This is the icing on the cake." She thought she heard Mama clapping too.

Two years later, Loretta made her very last film, Lady In A Corner, co-starring Brian Keith and Lindsay Frost, also for NBC and also filmed in Toronto.

Critic Hal Erikson said; "The sole reason for watching this made-for-TV movie is star Loretta Young, looking as youthful and stunning as ever." She was then 77 years young.

Exactly as aired December 22nd, 1986.

D.W. Griffith classics The Greatest Question (1919), The White Rose (1923), Hoodoo Ann (1916)

The Greatest Question is a 1919 American drama film directed by D. W. Griffith, Starring Lillian Gish and Robert Harron.

The White Rose (1923) is a silent film directed by D. W. Griffith. The film was written, produced, and directed by Griffith, and stars Mae Marsh, Ivor Novello, Carol Dempster, and Neil Hamilton.

The film was shot in several locations throughout Florida and Louisiana. Though this film is extant it is one of Griffith's rarely seen films. According to film historian William K. Everson, a tinted and toned 35 mm nitrate print was allowed to decompose in the 1960s, leaving only a sole B/W dupe.

Hoodoo Ann is a 1916 Lloyd Ingraham-directed American comedy-drama silent film, written by D.W. Griffith and released by Triangle Film Corporation.

Original Scores, Brian Pinette
