Pre-code gems! Barbara Stanwyck, Miriam Hopkins, Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Gary Cooper

Penthouse (1933) Myrna Loy, Warner Baxter (Pre-code)

Penthouse is a 1933 American Pre-Code crime film starring Warner Baxter as a lawyer and Myrna Loy, as a call girl who helps him with a murder case.

It was directed by W. S. Van Dyke and written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, based on a novel by Arthur Somers Roche. The film was later remade as the more sanitized Society Lawyer in 1939, without the risqué pre-Code dialogue.

Baby Face (1933) Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent

Baby Face is a 1933 American Pre-Code dramatic film directed by Alfred E. Green;

The film starred Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent.

Based on a story by Darryl F. Zanuck (under the pseudonym Mark Canfield), this sexually-charged Pre-Code Hollywood film is about an attractive young woman who uses sex to advance her social and financial status.

Marketed with the salacious tag line, "She had it and made it pay",  the film's open discussion of sex made it one of the most notorious films of the Pre-Code Hollywood era and helped bring the era to a close. The New York Times quotes Mark A. Vieira, author of Sin in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood as saying, "'Baby Face' was certainly one of the top 10 films that caused the Production Code to be enforced."

Design for Living (1933) Fredric March, Gary Cooper & Miriam Hopkins

Design for Living is a 1933 American Pre-Code comedy film produced and directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Fredric March, Gary Cooper and Miriam Hopkins.

Based on the 1932 play Design for Living by Noël Coward, with a screenplay by Ben Hecht, the film is about a woman who cannot decide between two men who love her, and the trio agree to try living together in a platonic friendly relationship.

Criticism was mixed, with some critics praising the film, but many were ambivalent about its great departure from Coward's play. Coward said, "I'm told that there are three of my original lines left in the film—such original ones as 'Pass the mustard'."
The film was a box office success, ranking as one of the top ten highest grossing films of 1933. All three of the lead actors—March, Cooper, and Hopkins—received attention from this film as they were all at the peak of their careers.
